The Royal Oak Fun Day

Spirits were certainly not dampened by the slightly inclement weather at The Royal Oak Fun Day on Sunday 18th May. The pub and its garden were packed as villagers and families came to join in the fun.

The idea had started when the girls from the Oak decided to take part in the Race For Life at Waddesdon Manor, in aid of Cancer research and relief. Then they decided they would make a real fun day of it back at the pub in the afternoon and evening.

Teri and Gary had made a huge effort to ensure that there was a lot of fun to be had. The back garden sported a coconut shy, bouncy castle, disco area and barbecue. Inside the pub was decorated and jam-packed.
The highlight of the afternoon was a tug of war tournament, held outside in the car park. Around a dozen teams had been formed and they pulled with determination to noisy shouts of encouragement from the enthusiastic crowd.

Eventually the tournament was won by Hall’s Haulers from Wingrave, led by Andy Hall from the Wingrave Post Office, but not before yours truly had fallen flat on his backside!

Then back inside and the fun continued on with a disco until late in the evening.

The day raised over £2200. Around a £1000 was raised by the Race For Life completed in the morning by Teri, Kerry, Kim and some of the other girls. This has been donated to Cancer Research and most of the remainder has been donated to the Ian Rennie Hospice, as Teri and everyone at the pub wanted to see a local charity benefit.

Well done to Gary, Teri, Kerry, Kim and everyone else who worked so hard to make the day such a success!

The following note from the girls at The Royal Oak appeared in the same issue:

Just a note to say a huge thanks to everyone who supported our charity day at the Royal Oak Inn on Sunday 18th May 2003.

The day began with 12 of us girls setting off for Waddesdon Manor to participate in the Race For Life. This went very well with all us girls finishing the race within an hour! And better still, whilst raising approximately £1,000.

Then it was back to the Royal Oak to organised chaos with the tug of war under way with all the villagers involved—and the railway boys. Although very sporting I think that there may have been some cheating going on! No one seemed to mind as everyone had the charity on the minds, even paying to pull the rope!

The coconut shy and bouncy castle were both a huge success. A massive thanks to our friend Loius who dedicated his skills to the barbecue even though he had to go to work straight afterwards.

A big ‘well done’ to Halisi who is now walking around without his hair or beard, but raised lots of money in the process.

We would also like to thank everyone for their support with the raffle. You can now come into the pub without being hassled by the Moult sisters to buy more tickets!

We at the Royal Oak would like to say thanks to the 630 Club for their kind donation of £70, given by everyone at their St George’s evening.
The total figure raised was approximately £2,300. You were all part of this generosity, but we're still collecting so as soon as we have the final amount we will let you know.

Once again THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT!!!!!!! Here's to the next one.
